Saint-Clair Trio

 

Founded in 1990 the Saint-Clair Trio specializes in original literature for soprano, clarinet and piano (and all possible combinations thereof). Beyond the well-known works of Mozart, Schubert and Spohr, the Trio has found many pieces from 20th-century composers such as Ralph Vaughan-Williams, Ned Rorem, Dominick Argento, Matyas Seiber, and others to enable them to appeal to the tastes of a wide range of audiences. The Trio is mainly active in Germany.  Programs include works of Schubert, Gershwin, Rorem, Argento, Mozart, Seiber, Wolpe, Bliss, Cooke, Jacob, Spohr among others.

.Born and raised in Texas, CAROL SAINTCLAIR studied singing and opera at the University of Texas at Austin, where she received her Master's Degree in Opera. In 1976 she won first prize in the Metropolitan Opera Guild Regional Auditions. Part of this prize was a scholarship to study in Graz, Austria with the American Institute of Musical Studies, which led to her engagement as a Lyric Coloratura at the opera in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. There she performed more than 30 roles, including Nedda, Gilda, Musetta, Zerlina, Gretel, and Woglinde to name a few, plus many roles in modern operas.  She has made guest appearances in the opera houses in Zurich, Cologne, Stuttgart, the Summer Festival in Heidelberg, and on tour in Zagreb, Munich, Frankfurt, Rio de Janiero, Sao Paolo and Buenos Aires. She has also done extensive concert work and has sung the soprano solos in over a dozen of the major oratorios, including the Requiems of Brahms, Mozart, and Faure, Handel's Messiah, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. From 1987 to 1996 CAROL SAINTCLAIR was engaged as a Lyric soprano in the opera house in Osnabrück, making her debut in such roles as Mimi, Tatyana, Donna Anna, Michaela and Rosalinde.  She is well know as a Lied singer and has performed in various chamber music concerts with a wide variety of repertoire.

Carol offers classes in basic elements of singing, German/Italian diction, Lied interpretation, chamber music, coaching opera roles and giving informative talks about theater and concert life in Germany.

WOLFGANG MECHSNER was born in Dortmund and studied with Prof. G. Weichert at the Northwest German Music Academy in Münster. As a student he performed as a soloist with the symphonic orchestras in Münster and Dortmund.  After teaching for two years at the City Conservatory of Osnabrück he became a full-time teacher at the University of Osnabrück at its branch in Vechta in 1985.  In addition to his piano class at the Conservatory in Osnabrück,  a branch of the Musikhochschule in Hannover WOLFGANG MECHSNER is a popular soloist and accompanist for Lied and chamber music and is author of a biography of the German composer, Wilhelm Petersen and a book entitled "Improvising Song Accompaniments”.
